When do you install a repeater?
A repeater is needed if the components on the DALI line use more power than the 250 mA provided by a DALI router or if you exceed the maximum cable length.
Where do you place a repeater?
You place a repeater at a spot halfway down the DALI line. This is because immediately after the router you still have full power, so you want to do this in the field so that the collapsed power gets a boost.
How long can a DALI line be?
This depends on the type of cabling, with 2 x 0.8 it is 100 metres and with 2 x 1.5 it is 300 metres. This is the distance from the feeding point, e.g. the router, to the furthest end point. So for example, you can go 250 metres to the left and 250 metres to the right. See this page for more information on the DALI protocol.
Can DALI-2 drivers be added to a Helvar system?
Yes this is possible. Only pre-2015 systems do not support this. See this page for more information on the DALI protocol.
How many components can there be on a DALI line?
With standard DALI a maximum of 64, with DALI-2 64 output devices (drivers, relays, etc.) and 64 input devices (sensors, switches, etc.). With DALI-2, we recommend a maximum of 15 input devices so that the DALI line does not become overloaded in terms of milliamps. See this page for more information on the DALI protocol.
Where can I download the Helvar Designer software?
The software is free and licence-free and will be made available after you sign a software training followed with us.
What is the difference between DALI and DALI-2?
DALI-2 is an extension to DALI. Additional functionalities and certification have been added. See this page for more information on the DALI protocol.
What is the difference between the 905/910 and the 950 router?
Both types of routers are DALI-2, except that the 950 is a DALI-2 Multimaster. That means it can also read input devices on DALI-2, such as sensors and third-party control panels.
Can any DALI-2 sensor be connected to Helvar's system?
If a sensor is certified according to DALI-2 and complies this will work in theory. We do recommend always having this tested by us first.
Can the Helvar system be self-programmed?
Yes you can, for this you can get a software training of 1 day to follow.
Can Helvar routers be accessed directly through a browser or VPN?
No, a Windows computer or laptop is always needed to open the Designer software on and access the routers with it.
Do the Helvar routers have a DHCP capability for the network port?
No, this is always a fixed (fixed) IP address.
Does the Helvar system require maintenance?
There is no physical maintenance required on the components, nor any software updates to keep them functioning properly. However, we do recommend a service contract take out so that you are helped quickly in case of any malfunctions.
Is internet required for the Helvar system?
No, only certain functionalities of the monitoring system ucontrol or Helvar Insights do require internet to send an email with reports.
Can existing lighting or a pendant lamp without DALI also be switched on the Helvar system?
Yes you can, various relay modules and dimmers are available for this purpose.
