Helvar in the world's largest bike park

Underneath the Stationsplein at Utrecht Central Station is the Stationsplein bicycle shed. By the end of 2018, the bicycle shed should be able to park 12,500 bicycles. This makes it the largest bicycle shed in the world. Bam Bouw en Techniek commissioned us to supply the lighting management system to control all the lighting.

The light management system

The bicycle parking consists of central areas, cycle paths and aisles where bicycles can be parked. Safety, comfort and energy saving are important principles for controlling the lighting. This is why the lighting in the central areas and near the cycle paths is set to a fixed value.

In the aisles where bicycles can be parked, lighting is controlled by motion sensors. If no movement is detected, the lighting is on low level. As soon as a cyclist cycles into the aisle, the lighting switches to 100%. After a set time, the lighting dims back to low level.
