Hoog Catharijne

Hoog Catharijne was opened in 1973 by Princess Beatrix. After its opening, Hoog Catharijne was the largest indoor shopping centre in Europe. Since 2010, the shopping centre has been completely renovated. With some 90 shops and tens of millions of visitors a year, Hoog Catharijne is the most famous indoor shopping centre in the Netherlands.

Ultimate shopping experience

Klepierre, owner of Hoog Catharijne, wants to give visitors to Hoog Catharijne the ultimate shopping experience. This can be seen in everything; spaces with high ceilings, high-end materials, lots of glass but also an excellent lighting design originating from Bartenbach. Because lighting plays an important role at Hoog Catharijne.

Light management

To control the lighting throughout Hoog Catharijne, Klepierre chose Helvar's lighting management system in 2015. Working closely with BAM, ULC, Bartenbach and Klepierre, we supply the light management system to control all lighting at Hoog Catharijne.

Optimal perception through light

Lighting is so much more than just functional. Lighting affects the atmosphere, it accentuates and can even be used to supporting human biological rhythms. To make the latter possible, Tunable White lighting is used, among other things. With Tunable White lighting, the colour temperature of the light can be adjusted to imitate natural light.
This is also done at Hoog Catharijne. All lighting fixtures are in Tunable White, ensuring that the light inside has the same colour temperature as the light outside. Among other things, this ensures the most natural transition possible for visitors as they walk from outside to inside, and vice versa.

To best match the colour temperature of indoor light to outdoor light, we control the colour temperature based on the time of day. Besides colour temperature, intensity is very important. We control this by means of a light sensor that measures the light intensity outside. We combine these two aspects by means of time-controlled scenes so that the lighting can be matched to the outdoor light as well as possible.

All LED drivers in the lighting fixtures at Hoog Catharijne are from Helvar and implemented as DALI type8. Lighting manufacturer Projectleuchten GmbH from Germany supplied the luminaires.

RGB colour control

RGB lighting has also been used in several places at Hoog Catharijne. This makes it possible to change the complete atmosphere in a room. One of the applications, for example, is that we use automatic time control to turn the lighting orange every year on King's Day.

For the opening, we programmed a show in the Style Room for both the DALI Tunable White lighting and the RGB lighting via DMX. This show lasts about 3 minutes and can be started via a web-based application for a special occasion or event.

Manual operation

Kleppiere has the option of switching the various pre-programmed scenes per room via a tablet. Ideal for one-off extended opening hours, for example.

Other

The logo at the entrance to Hoog Catharijne is also controlled by us. Even the sockets can be switched via our system so that lighting in Christmas trees can also be switched on and off via time controls.
