The DALI standard

DALI stands for 'Digital Addressable Lighting Interface'. The DALI protocol is the worldwide standard for professional and digital control of lighting. All major lighting manufacturers have come to an agreement on how a lighting system should communicate with the control and operating systems. This is laid down by the IECC in the technical standard IEC62386. The DALI standard describes what manufacturers must comply with in order to manufacture DALI-certified equipment. Besides controlling lighting, the luminaires can also be easily monitored via DALI for, for example, energy consumption.

Helvar played an active role in the creation of the DALI protocol in 1999. As a member of the DALI Alliance Board, Helvar is closely involved in the developments of the protocol.

  • Global standard
The DALI protocol is the global standard for controlling lighting
  • Brand-independent
In a DALI system, all brands of devices can be used interchangeably
  • Bidirectional
Control and feedback - in addition to switching and dimming, status messages are also returned
  • Freely addressable
Each DALI participant is given a unique address in the software and can therefore be controlled individually

Rapid

At 1200 bits per second, DALI is lightning fast. A requirement for lighting control; even a small delay could cause annoying situations.

Future-proof

Because each component in the software has a unique address, the system can be adapted and expanded at any time.

Simple installation

A DALI system is easy to install. There is freedom in cabling: star, loop-through or a combination is possible and a simple 2-wire cable can be used.

Interchangeable

DALI is an open standard. Luminaires of all brands can be used interchangeably. DALI-2 control devices can also be exchanged.

DALI cable

A simple 2-core cable can be used for cabling. The maximum length of a DALI cable of 0.8 mm² is 100 metres and at 1.5 mm² it is 300 metres. It is also possible to combine the DALI cabling with the 230 V power supply in e.g. a 5-core cable.

DALI programming

With advanced software, a DALI system can be fully programmed. With the software, lighting can be divided into groups and commands and scenes can be controlled and read out.

DALI lighting control

DALI lighting is intelligent. A luminaire with a DALI driver is individually controllable and all kinds of smart functionalities can be assigned to it.

DALI vs Helvar

Besides the standard DALI functionalities, a manufacturer has the option to add additional functionalities within the guidelines. Therefore, Helvar has added extensive functionalities that simplify commissioning, increase reliability and capacity and optimise user comfort.

Standard DALI

  • 64 DALI addresses (luminaires, controls, etc.)
  • 16 groups per system
  • 15 scenes per LED driver
  • 250 mA DALI power supply

DALI + Helvar

  • 64 unlimited DALI addresses (luminaires, controls, etc.)
  • 16 65.534 groups per system
  • 15 128 scenes per LED driver
  • 250 mA DALI power supply (+ 250 mA extra with repeater)

Difference between DALI and DALI-2

The DALI protocol has undergone a restructuring. Many new functionalities and commands have come out of this. One important change is that the certification of DALI components can no longer be done by manufacturers themselves but by the independent Digital Illumination Interface Alliance (DiiA) needs to be done. This ensures better-quality products.
